Making Period Flicks is never an easy thing in India, unlike Hollywood,we dont have Budget-Friendly producers who doesn’t care about the money or time spent in making a movie.There a director can shoot for years till he gets his desired output.But in India only very few producers has the guts and money to take a risk in the period flicks.So the director has lots of constraints,he has to complete the movie in a specified time that too with the given resources.Really its an uphill task for any director, still Hariharan has come up with an indeed Magnum Opus Pazhassi Raja.Though the story is just a one-line i.e how Mammootty(Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja)  faces British through his Guerilla Operations in the Wayanad woods,the screenplay and the way its executed with a grand treatment is something really amazing.Each and every frame reveals the enormous work put behind the scene.Dense forest locations,how Mammootty form a group for Guerilla warfare,how they are getting trained and how they assault the British by Bow and Arrows are shown in a classic style.Also the art director has taken utmost care in each and every thing,as a result the costumes,guns,tanks,wood houses,furnitures,palm leaf depict the 1790’s to us.On coming to performance side though Mammotty does a neat job its the Padmapriya who steals the show in the movie with her brilliant stunts.And finally comes the Maestro, Needless to say, as usual rocks the entire movie with his Scintillating Western Classical Style Background Scores.Esp.Theme Music during War sequences(Goosebumps Guaranteed),the scene where the tribals are learning martial arts &  the song Aadhiushassandhya Poothathivide are of typical Maestro’s stamp.Jus a tip of the iceberg in Maestro’s Magic below:

Pazhassi Raja – Watch it just for its Making and Ilaiyaraaja.

நண்பர் ஒருவர் பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனத்தின் நேர்முகத் தேர்வுக்காக பெங்களூர் வந்த போது அப்படியே என்னைப் பார்ப்பதற்க்காக என் அறைக்கு வந்தார்.அவர் எனக்கு கல்லூரியில் ஒரு வருடம் சீனியர், இருந்தாலும் எனக்கு நல்ல பழக்கம்.பரஸ்பரம் ந‌ல‌ விசாரிப்புக‌ளுக்குப்பின் டீக‌டைக்குச் சென்றோம்.நண்பர் குழப்பத்துடன் “என்ன நண்பா டீ கடைன்னு பேக்கெரிக்கு கூட்டிட்டு வந்திருக்க ” என்றார். “பெங்களூர்ல டீ கடை,பேக்கெரி எல்லாம் ஒன்னுதான் ” என்றதும் நண்பர் மேலும் குழம்பிப் போய்” சரி, டீகடைன்னு சொல்ற,பாய்லர காணோம்? ” என்றார்.மச்சான், “  பெங்களூர்ல பாய்லர் வச்ச டீ கடை கிடையாது, ஒரு Flask’ல டீ மாதிரி ஒன்னு இருக்கும் அதத்தான் போனா போகுதுன்னு நமக்கு ஊத்தி கொடுப்பான்,இல்லை உங்களுக்கு பாய்லர் உள்ள டீகடைல தான் குடிக்கணும்னா,ஓசுர் தான் போகணும்”  என்றேன்.நண்பர் அந்த பேக்கெரி கடைகாரரை ” இதெல்லாம் ஒரு டீ கடை,இதுக்கு ஒரு ஓனர் ” என்ற ரீதியில் பார்வையால் சபித்துவிட்டு வாடிய முகத்துடன் அந்த So-called ‘டி’யை வாங்கி (பெருமாள் கோயில் தீர்த்தம் போல்) குடித்தார்.(நண்பர்,நேர்முகத் தேர்வில் தோற்றிருந்தால் கூட இவ்வளவு வருத்தபட்டிருக்கமாட்டார் போலும்)

ந‌ண்ப‌ரின் ம‌னநிலையை என்னால் முழுவ‌துமாக‌ புரிந்துகொள்ள‌ முடிந்த‌து‌, நானும் பெங்களூர் வ‌ந்த‌ போது இத்த‌கைய‌ க‌லாசார‌ மாற்ற‌த்தை(?) க‌ண்டு பல நாட்கள் புரியாம‌ல் த‌வித்திருக்கிறேன்.ஏன்,முதன் முதலில் பெங்களூர் வரும் அநேக த‌மிழ‌ர்க‌ளுக்கும் இதே மனநிலைதான் இருந்திருக்கும் என்று ந‌ண்ப‌ர் பேக்கெரி கடைகாரரை பார்த்த விதத்தில் தெளிவாகத் தெரிந்த‌து.
ந‌ம் மூளையில் டீகடை என்றால் எப்படி இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு Prototype உள்ளது.அதன் முதல் ரூல் பாய்லர்,அது இல்லாத டீகடையில் தேவாமிர்தமே குடித்தாலும் நமக்கு அது டீயாக தெரிவதில்லை.என்ன தான் வீட்டில் நெஸ்க‌ஃபே இருந்தாலும் பலர் தங்கள் நண்பர்களுடன் கடைகளில் டீ அருந்துவதை மிகவும் விரும்பத்தான் செய்கின்றனர்.குறிப்பாக கல்லூரி பருவத்திலிருந்து டீ கடை காதல் வளரத் தொடங்குகிறது.(அதை வளர்ப்பதில் தம் அடிப்போரின் பங்கு கணிசமானது.)ஒவ்வொரு நட்பு வட்டாரத்திலும் தம் அடிக்கும் நண்பனுக்குத் துணையாக தம் அடிக்காதோர் கூட்டமும் செல்கிறது.இங்கு எனக்கு இரண்டு விஷயங்கள் இன்றும் புலப்படவில்லை

1.தம் அடிக்கும் போது ஏன் டீ குடிக்கிறார்கள் ?

2.சரி,தம் அடிப்போர் தனியாகவும் செல்வதில்லை,துணைக்கு ஒருவனை கண்டிப்பாக அழைத்துச் செல்கிறார்கள்.(பெரும்பாலும் அந்தத் துணை தம் அடிப்பதில்லை.இதில் வேடிக்கை என்ன வென்றால் அந்தத் துணை ஒவ்வொரு தம் அடிக்கும் நண்பனோடும் தனித் தனியே டீ கடைக்குச் சென்று அது குடித்த டீக்களின் எண்ணிக்கை அவர்களின் ‘தம்’களின் எண்ணிக்கயைவிட அதிகம்.)

‌கல்லூரி முடிந்து சில வருடங்களுக்குப் பிறகு இரு நண்பர்கள் யதச்சேயாக சாலையில் சந்தித்தாலும் இரண்டொரு வார்த்தைகளுக்குப் பிறகு விழுகிற வார்த்தை ” வாடா மச்சான் ஒரு ‘டீ’ய போட்டுட்டே பேசுவோம் “.நமக்குத் தெரியாமலே டீகடைகள் நம் வாழ்வோடு பிணைத்துவிட்டன.எத்த‌னை டீ கடைக‌ள் வந்தாலும் கூட்ட‌திற்கு குறைவில்லை.என‌க்கும் டீ க‌டைக‌ளுக்குமான‌ நெருக்கும் சென்னையில் ஏற்ப‌ட்ட‌து.க‌ல்லூரி கால‌த்தில் ப‌ஸ் ஸ்டாண்டு டீ க‌டைக‌ளில் நின்று ஸ்கூட்டியில் போகும் பெண்க‌ளை ரசித்துக்‌ கொண்டிருந்த‌ நான், டீ கடைகளை ர‌சிக்க‌ ஆர‌ம்பித்த‌து திருவ‌ல்லிக்கேணியில்தான்.வேலை தேடி கொண்டிருந்த சமயம் மொத்த மேன்ஷனும் காலியாகவிட நான் மட்டும் தனித்துவிடபட்டிருப்பேன். விகடன்,குமுதம்,குங்குமம்,வண்ணத்திரையிலிருந்து ஹிண்டு வரை படித்து கிழித்த பின்பும் ஒரு நாளைக்கு நாற்ப்பத்தியெட்டு மணி நேரம் இருப்பது போல தோன்றும்.சரி, ஒரு கால் மணி நேரத்தையாவது விரட்டலாமே என்று கண்ட நேரத்தில் டீ கடைகளுக்குச் செல்ல ஆரம்பித்தேன்.காலை 5.30 மணி டீ கடைகள் திறப்பதில் ஆரம்பித்து இரவு 10.30 மணிக்கு கடைகள் மூடும் வரையில் எல்லா நேரங்களிலும் வித விதமாக டீ,லைட் டீ,1/2,காபி,மசாலா பால்,ராகி மால்ட் குடித்த அனுபவம் உண்டு.வேலை வெட்டி இல்லாததால் டீ கடையில் நடக்கும் சம்பவங்களில் கவனம் செலுத்த ஆரம்பித்தேன்.அவை மிகவும் சுவாரஸ்யமானவை.

எல்லா டீ கடைகளிலும் முன்று கதாபாத்திரங்கள் கட்டாயம் உண்டு.கல்லாவில் நாயர்,(சட்டை போடாத) டீ மாஸ்டர்,பக்கத்து கடைகள் மற்றும் மேன்ஷன்களுக்கு டீ எடுத்துச் செல்லும் ஒரு சிறுவன். காலை 7 மணியிலிருந்து முற்பகல் 11 மணி வரை வியாபாரம் ப‌டு அமர்க்க‌ள‌மாக‌ இருக்கும்.பொதுவாக‌ க‌ட்டிட‌ வேலைக்குச் செல்ப‌வ‌ர்க‌ள் காலைச் சிற்றுண்டி டீ க‌டைக‌ளில்தான்.ஒரு ப‌ன் அல்ல‌து இர‌ண்டு பொறைக‌ள்,டீயுட‌ன் முடித்து கொள்வார்க‌ள்.ஒரு கூட்டமாகத்தான் வருவார்கள்.(இதே கூட்டத்தில் ஒரு பெண் 11.30 மணி அளவில் தூக்கு ஒன்றில் டீ கேட்டு வருவாள்)அதன் பிறகு நடைபயிற்சி சென்று திரும்பியவர்கள்,மேன்ஷன்வாசிகள்,கழுத்தில் தாலி,வாயில் ‘தம்’ மற்றும் கையில் தேநீர் கிளாஸுடனும் இருக்கும் மென்பொருள் ஆசாமிகள்.

கீழ்கண்ட மூன்று விஷயங்கள் எல்லா டீ கடைகளுக்கும் பொதுவானவை:

1.முன் பின் தெரியாத எவரும் உரிமையோடு மாஸ்டர் ஒரு லைட் டீ, 2 காபி,மாஸ்டர் ஒரு 1/2 டீ,மாஸ்டர் 6 டீ அதில ஒன்னு சக்கர கம்மி என்று சொல்லும் விதம் எனக்கு ஆச்சரியமாகவும்,சந்தோஷமாகவும் இருந்தது.

2.பல சமயம் 15 கிளாஸ்கள் வரிசையாக அடுக்கி வைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும்,பக்கத்து கடைகளில் குடுப்பதற்க்கு.டீ மாஸ்டர் எடுக்கும் பாலின் அளவு மிகச் சரியாக 15 கிளாஸ்களை நிரப்பும்.அவர் டீ ஆத்தும் விதம் ம‌ற்றும் வேகம் எல்லாமே ரசிப்புக்குரியவை.

3.டீ கடையில் வேலை பார்ப்போர் பெரும்பாலும் வெளியில் சாப்பிட மாட்டார்கள்,கடையின் உள்ள‌யே ஒரு பானையில் சாதம் வைத்து சாப்பிடுவார்கள்.

மாலை வேளைகளில் திருவல்லிகேணி டீ கடைகளுக்கு முன்னால் பெரிய இருப்புச்சட்டியில் மசாலா பால் கொதித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும்.இதற்கென்று ஒரு ரசிகர் கூட்டமே உண்டு.

இப்படி பட்ட‌ நினைவுகளை சுமந்து வந்த எனக்கு பெங்களூர் டீ கடைகளின் அனுபவம் எப்படி இருந்திருக்கும் என்று சொல்லத் தேவையில்லை…….

What the hell ? When everyone going gaga over ” Unnai Pol Oruvan “, why am scribbling about ” A Wednesday ” ? To show am different from others ? Never.Exactly a year before, when ” A Wednesday ” was on the theatres, i dint feel like to give it a chance since i was looking forward for ” Tahaan ” @ that time coz of Santhosh Sivan.Then positive reviews came from all the side, but it was out from the theatres when i thot of trying it.So i bought the DVD (Thanks to Moserbaer) only to place in my wardrobe (Infact i dint even open the DVD wrapper) Finally today when my roomates were getting ready for ” Unnai Pol Oruvan ” i decided to try the original first.The movie ended around 12.30.I was almost speechless and the movie completely took my breath away.With no mood to sleep, i was keep on wandering to hall and bedroom with my mind rewinding the scenes.Hardly, i’d experienced such kinda feelings and emotions after watching a movie.

The way the movie get into the flashback thru Anupam Kher’s narration is itself a classic attempt of story telling.The lightning-pace screenplay,brilliant execution of the scenes,well matured dialogs (Eg.They have asked the questions on Friday and Saturday.Iam just replying to them on Wednesday.) and amazing performances (in the descending order scale) by Naseeruddin Shah (Simply unbelievable performance.!!!) Anupam Kher,Jimmy Shergill makes the movie one of the best ever in Indian Cinema.Above all, the director’s brilliance was clearly evident in the way he handled the characterisation of two cops(Raj & Arif).Instead of abruptly linking them into the story,first portraying their characters with a scene and joining them into the story is a brilliant idea.

Its  really hard to believe this is a debut movie  for Neeraj Pandey.After Katradhu Thamizh, i would say this is a movie straight from the director’s heart without any compromises for the so-called commercial purposes.It doesn’t matter whether u have watched Unnai Pol Oruvan or not,please grab a Moserbaer DVD(50 INR only) and experience a terrific roller-coaster ride.

Though listening to this song for years, i haven’t got so emotional as in the last few days,hence of late it become an habit not going to bed without listening feeling Vaigai Karai Kaatre…..Agreed Jesudas or Yesudas (as u prefer) has done a remarkable job in evoking the poignancy, but  wat’s the most beautiful thing is,T.Rajender’s soulful Orchestration,which took the song to Himalayan levels.Eg.a Solo pathos violin piece in both interludes is jus more than a classic which kindles all our emotions, thus we end up in crying literally.(Also you can hear a mild guitar piece in the background when the violin is playing in both interludes.) Wat’s more surprising is, as in Raja’s style,T.R. has used Guitar in a pathos number which is very unconventional in those days.

Actually i thot of writing only abt the Vaigai Karai Kaatre, but accidentally chanced upon another gem in youtube (when searching for Vaigai Karai Kaatre…) which proved sternly, TR is not a Kaama Soma composer, instead he loves to use pretty lively instruments in orchestration which is so pleasant to ears unlike TR’s today compositions.Wats so special abt this song ? Sheer Sitar Magic!!! Song starts off with a violin orchestration followed by Sitar,there after you can hear only Sitar thru out the song in all the three interludes drenched in Hindustani Classical Flavour.Needless to say, SPB has done an excellent job as usual.

Ironically, TR has become a joker today in our minds, Thanks to his clown-like appearances in the movies + nonsensical approach in interviews.Still i feel he carved a space in the Tamil Music with his evergreen melodies.(But sadly the current genre folks unable to realise those ones.)

Its been more than 2 hrs since i logged into wordpress with an intention of breaking my hibernation,still i can’t get the right words for a post.But interestingly i managed to post 15+ tweets @ the same time.Here lies the Twitter’s Mantra for success.

• You no need to sit and think for hours to post a stuff unlike blogs.
• You no need to worry abt the quality of your stuff or the hit ratio or negative comments.
• Most importantly No-nonsense rules and grammars applied in it to accomplish a stuff.
• You can say about anything from Share Market to Cinema, from Physiology to Biotechnology, from Paravai Muniyamma to Pameela Anderson since u need jus one iota of information unlike blog where u have to know something to write atleast a para.
• You can scribble what you feel,what you have seen or experienced in your day today life.

An article which i read in last month’s Hindu says that Post-Twitter

No Surprises in it. In short, Twitter is like Pettai Rap ,you no need to become a Maestro to craft a song with its complex Raaga definitions.You Just be a Thenisai Thendral Deva,look @ the life and compose a Gaana hands down.

I was bit surprised when i found a fork and spoon in my plate along with poori.Not only this, i find many folks wrestling with rava dosa by using spoons.Just coz of this,i think of-late most of the servers are placing the spoons in plates before u ask.Eating with hands or spoon doesn’t matter, its one’s own choice.But there’s a basic criteria what all the foods are meant for spoons and what all for hands.Struggling with rava dosa or poori by using spoon is utter stupidity.Why we use spoons, jus coz some foods aren’t comfortable with hands,but when the spoon itself becoming a burden then why the hell we need to use?

With just two days to go for Maestro’s Birthday i would like to revive some of his rare classics with visuals.Lets start with an amazing solo number sung by Janaki from the movie Un Kaneel Neer Vazhinthaal.Though the movie was a disaster,it had an interesting combo for the first (and ofcourse last time too) Rajini + Balumahendra.Probably many might have seen this movie in Raj Tv.The song is a typical Balu’s duet shot in his favt ooty locations with the mesmerizing janaki’s voice @ the backdrop.How come ooty looks so refreshing only under the lens of Balu ?
